What a dot means

Each detection is one satellite pixel where something hot was seen — about 2–3 km across over the lower 48, wider toward the edges of the satellite's view (Alaska pixels run 7–8 km north–south). It means "heat somewhere in this square", not an exact location.

These are raw satellite hotspots, not NWS warnings. Gas flares, refineries and industrial sites show up too.

Zoom in past city level to see each pixel's true footprint.
